Sarah Garland, PhD

Sarah Garland, PhD is Founder and Executive Director of Triple Helix. She received a PhD in Plant Sciences from the University of Cambridge, UK, as a Cambridge International Scholar. Her doctoral research focused on the cutting-edge field of CRISPR gene editing in plants. Sarah’s recent work at Columbia University as an Earth Institute Postdoctoral Fellow explored the role of crop biotechnology in developing nutritious and climate-resilient agriculture systems. Her writing has been featured in publications such as Scientific American, Slate, and The New Republic. Sarah holds a B.S. in Biology from Duke University.

Jayne Morrow, PhD is Senior Advisor on International Standards at the National Institute for Standards and Technology. She previously served in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy as the Executive Director of the National Science & Technology Council in the Obama Administration, and was Assistant Vice President for Research, Economic Development & Graduate Education at Montana State University. Jayne holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Montana State University, and an MS and PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Connecticut.

Lisa Sachs is Director of the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment, which aims to develop and advance policies and practices that shape investment to contribute to sustainable development. Lisa established CCSI’s robust research portfolio in cross-cutting areas of expertise and has overseen advisory work in many countries. She received a BA in Economics from Harvard University and earned her JD and MA degree in International Affairs from Columbia University.

Dan Voytas, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development and the Director of the Center for Precision Plant Genomics at the University of Minnesota, where his research focuses on developing methods to edit plant genomes. His laboratory developed a powerful genome editing reagent – Transcription Activator-Like Effector Nucleases (TALENs). He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences.

Ranveer Chandra, PhD is the Managing Director for Research for Industry, and the CTO of Agri-Food at Microsoft. He also leads the Networking Research Group at Microsoft Research, Redmond. Previously, Ranveer was the Chief Scientist of Microsoft Azure Global. Ranveer started the FarmBeats project at Microsoft in 2015, for which he was invited to present to the USDA and was featured by Bill Gates in GatesNotes.

Dan Glickman served as the US Secretary of Agriculture in the Clinton Administration and was a US Congressman from Kansas for 18 years. He has also directed the Harvard Kennedy School of Government’s Institute of Politics, chaired the Motion Picture Association of America, and was the Executive Director of the Aspen Institute’s Congressional Program. He is currently a Senior Fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Matthew Hayek, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies at New York University. His research quantifies the environmental impacts of our food system, with a specific focus on greenhouse gas emissions and contributions to climate change. Matthew’s current work analyzes the land use requirements of food production and examines regional and global opportunities for reforestation and negative carbon emissions.

Rob Paarlberg, PhD is an Emeritus Professor of Political Science at Wellesley College and an Adjunct Professor of Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He has been a member of the Board of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the National Research Council of the National Academies and has been a consultant to the IFPRI, USAID, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the Aspen Institute, and the Gates Foundation.

Cynthia Rosenzweig, PhD is the winner of the 2022 World Food Prize for her foundational research on climate change and agriculture. She leads the Climate Impacts Group at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and previously served as coordinating lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II Fourth Assessment Report in 2007 and the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land in 2019.

Dietram Scheufele, PhD is the Taylor-Bascom Chair in Science Communication and Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and in the Morgridge Institute for Research. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts, an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a lifetime associate of the U.S. National Research Council.
